Over the last 25 years many of our farmland birds have halved in numbers. The RSPB is working with the Government, the European Union and Farming community to halt this decline. The Volunteer and Farmer Alliance provides the farmer with a survey and report on the birds on their farm. This project allies the RSPB volunteers' enthusiasm with farmers who are interested in finding out more about the birds present on their farm. It is hoped that by taking part in the project farmers will be encouraged to implement management practices, which will benefit the farmland bird species present on their land. We are the largest wildlife conservation organisation in Europe with over one million members. Wildlife and the environment face many threats. Our work is focussed on the species and habitats that are in the greatest danger. Our work is driven by the passionate belief that: *Birds and wildlife enrich people's lives * The health of the bird population is indicative of the health of the plane, on which the future of the human race depends. * We all have a responsibility to protect wildlife. We have more than one million members, over 13,500 volunteers, 1300 staff, more than 200 nature reserves, 10 regional offices, four country offices....and one vision - to work for a better environment rich in birds and wildlife.

Description of volunteering duties:

  • The RSPB Local Gropup for West Glamorgan acts as the face of the RSPB in the Swansea area. They organise a number of wildlife trips for local members and monthly indoor talks at the Environment Centre in Swansea. They also open Blackpill Wildlife centre for the public during the winter, raise funds for the RSPB, carry out children's educational sessions in the area and attend local events to raise the profile of the organisation. It is run by a small committee and is supported by general volunteers. They are always looking for new volunteers to contribute to the life of the group and help out with their events and activities.
