In May 1999, Newport Credit Union began providing residents of four wards in Newport with access to a low cost savings and loan scheme. Local residents were invited to become members of the Credit Union whereby they contribute a certain amount of their savings, allowing them to borrow up to twice the amount of those savings and make repayments at an affordable rate with low interest. The project, which began operating out of the Bettws estate shopping centre, currently serves five wards of the city with membership of over 900.
The Credit Union has recently been given permission to establish a base in the centre of Newport, giving it a central point from which to help residents of from all wards of the city. With the ongoing support of dedicated volunteers, proactive churches and the help of other community groups and statutory agencies, Newport Credit Union will be able to offer more local residents hope in the face of financial adversity.
We are looking for volunteers to man our various collection points around the city.
