To provide the carer of someone who is elderly, frail and/or suffering from memory loss with a break, with the knowledge that their dependant (our client) is being well looked after at the Day Centre. To look after the client, making sure they are happy and stimulated through talking, singing, playing games or just socialising.

Swansea Carers' Centre currently has the following volunteering opportunity:

Ty Conway Caring Breaks Volunteer

Main areas of responsibility are:

  • To arrive in time to greet visitors
  • To report to a member of staff if they are unclear or uncertain about a visitor
  • To help visitors into the building and settle them down in the sitting room. This may involve going out to cars and helping visitors and their carers into Ty Conway
  • For certain visitors who use wheelchairs, to assist visitor into wheelchair and bring them into the building
  • To help visitors into and out of their coats, gloves etc
  • To listen to the carers should they need to discuss the visitor’s needs for the day
  • To serve tea and coffee to visitors at appropriate times
  • To use their own skills in looking after the visitors.  This could be listening to them, playing card games, board games, throwing games etc. Helping the clients in handicrafts. (Some volunteers like to use other skills, e.g. gardening, aromatherapy, singing.)
  • Collect lunch from Rose Cross and if no member of staff is available to receive lunch money and give receipt to carer
  • Serve lunch to the visitors
  • Clear away plates from the dining table and wash up
  • Ensure that the kitchen is left in a clean and tidy state
  • Help to close up the building, e.g. music centre, TV off when all the visitors have left
  • To assist visitors to the toilet and call a member of staff if the visitor requires assistance
  • To be observant and report concerns
  • To be understanding, compassionate and gentle with the visitors and always remain good humoured
  • Treat visitors and carers with respect

All volunteers will be subject to an enhanced CRB disclosure.  Training provided. 

Volunteers must be age 18+.
