The youth programme will develop and increase community capacity by : • Providing young people with the skills in a wide variety of advocacy and training techniques • Helping young people with access to accurate information at a community level is more likely to assist them in attempting to quit cigarettes and to prevent young people from starting to smoke.

ASH Wales is the only voluntary organisation in Wales with the sole task of tackling the ill health caused by tobacco use. ASH Wales’s main aim is to achieve a reduction in and eventual elimination of the health problems associated with tobacco use. The vision of ASH Wales is "ASH Wales is committed to achieving a life free from tobacco for all people in Wales". The Mission of ASH Wales is "Towards a Tobacco Free Wales". Peer Health Promoters will be trained to work with young people in their local communities to deliver and provide informed and accurate information about smoking prevention and assistance with cessation. They will also be trained to provide brief intervention for smoking to their peers in their communities providing young people with the facts about tobacco – beyond the traditional "smoking is bad for your health" advice. The Peer Health Promoters will work to reduce tobacco use amongst their peers within their community, and will also develop skills that are appropriate to future community development and/or employment. The volunteers will engage with all young people aged 11-18 years regardless of smoking status. Peer Health Promoters will encourage young people to understand a range of factors around tobacco including economic, environmental, health, corporate responsibility, human rights and marketing. Peer Health Promoters will also be attending community events and schools etc to provide peer led information sessions to other peers around factors affecting tobacco use.
