Porthcawl Animal Welfare Society (PAWS for short) was set up over 25 years ago with the purpose to improve the lives of animals in the area. Since it's inception the Society has grown from strength to strength, with the links to such prestigious organisations as The Blue Cross, The Dog Trust, BAVO and ACDH. Thanks to organisations like these, with both private and business sponsorships, donations and fundraising from our shop and special events, we now have the facilities for micro-chipping, vaccination and kennelling for both dogs and cats. Above all we rehome pets whose lives have gone off coursefor whatever reason, sometimes cruelly so; this involves kennelling with daily exercise for rehabilitation and sometimes retraining, medical assessments, homechecking and back up. In each of the last years about 60-80 dogs and the same number of cats (mainly kittens taken off ferrel cats which have then been spayed) have been rehomed and mainly ferrel cats which have been caught, neutered and released in managed colonies. The biggest problem we face as a non profit making charity is obviously fund raising but we also need volunteers: this can be to help in our shop on Lias Road, to help run or initiate events or to help with the pets themselves. We take in cats and dogs who can not stay with their previous owners, look after them until we can find them a new home. All animals are vaccinated, neutered and chipped - we need to raise funds to do that job.

Description of volunteering duties:

  • Ideas as a team member with the fundraising committee, tends to meet once a month
  • Help with the organising and running of events
  • Maybe dog walk and be with the animals.
