Samaritans provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.
Whatever you're going through, whether it's big or small, don't bottle it up. We are here for you if you're worried about something, feel upset or confused, or just want to talk to someone.
We offer our service by telephone, email, letter and face to face in most of our branches.
Could you volunteer for Samaritans?
We offer a wide variety of ways for you to get involved with Samaritans. One of the roles available is identified below and give you an option of getting directly involved in delivering our service or assisting in a number of other ways that enable us to keep our service running.
Listening
The listening role is our most front line role and will carry out the very service that Samaritans is all about. You will be ‘listening’ through the phone, emails, letters, face to face or by text (depending on the branch you’re in) and providing real help to the thousands of people who make contact with the Samaritans each year.
The night shift is always a very difficult shift to fill, although it's absolutely vital that we keep the service open 24/7. If you apply for this role and don't mind doing extra night shifts, just mention 'I want to be a Night Owl' during your information session.
